Welcome to Fox Hall Vegan B&B
The B&B has been open for 36 years and been vegan since the beginning. Since we opened our doors in September 1990 we have welcomed thousands of guests from all over the UK and the world. Many have become forever friends and so many of our guests have been inspired to become vegan, if they weren't before.
At first we had two rooms in our converted hay barn at Fox Hall in Sedgwick, then four rooms as we extended into Fox Cottage and ran a self-catering as well.
In 2007 we left Fox Hall behind and moved our family and the B&B two miles nearer to Kendal into Prizet Stables, a much bigger, former coach house and stables owned by the same family since the 1950s. This meant lengthy and costly renovation as the house was completely re-wired and re-plumbed with new fire doors, fire retardant plasterboard ceilings, a new fire alarm system, new carpets throughout, some replacement windows, a whole new catering kitchen, redecoration plus numerous other alterations like creating a private family area. The electrician said he used a mile of electric cable.
In 2013 we added 22 solar panels to the roof and a wood-pellet boiler system for heating and hot water, as well as two ponds.
Our lockdown project in 2020 saw a complete revamp of the non-productive allotment at the bottom of the garden where we added a polytunnel, raised beds and apple and pear cordons, making the garden very productive indeed as we can now provide for ourselves, guests and the guinea pigs who need lots of fresh greens.
Our vegan-organic garden is a haven for wildlife with a family of wild rabbits, hedgehogs and many species of birds visiting, including nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker, greenfinch, goldfinch, blackcap, sparrowhawk.
In the last couple of years we have been concentrating on enriching wilder parts of the garden for bees, butterflies and moths.
Stepping outside at the back of the house to look across the fields beyond the river and surrounding hills, escaping into nature is our way of leaving the world behind for a few minutes - and we know our guests enjoy it, too.
